Traces of the outside world intrude, but they are few: dappled sunlight, an old table, a wooden chest, a rickety chair. A cave, then, but not any cave – not with an under-heated floor that is warm to the touch and the half-shell of a Philippe Starck bath in the corner. Rather, it is one of 18 caves making up the rooms of Le Grotte della Civita, a unique hotel in Matera, Basilicata, southern Italy.
